Signs You Should Replace Your Door Locks

Suresafe Locksmiths • December 22, 2022

Door locks are one of the most important safety features of any home. A faulty or outdated lock can be a security risk, leaving your family and belongings vulnerable to intruders. So how can you tell when it’s time to replace your door locks? Here are some signs that you might need to upgrade your current lock system:

WORN OUT KEYS

If you notice your key is becoming worn out, it may be time for a new lock. Worn out keys can break easily in the lock, leaving you locked out of the house until you get a locksmith to open it. Also, worn out keys can become brittle over time, making it easier for thieves to use them to break into your home.

RUSTY OR DAMAGED LOCKS

It is also important to note if the door lock itself is damaged or rusty as this could indicate it needs replacing. An old door lock may not provide adequate protection against potential intruders, so make sure all of your locks are up-to-date and in good working order.

POOR LOCKING MECHANISMS

A faulty lock mechanism is another sign you need to replace your locks. If you notice the door sticking when you try to unlock or lock the door, or if it is difficult to turn the key, this could indicate the locking mechanism has become worn out and needs to be replaced.

LOST OR STOLEN KEYS

If you have lost keys to any of your doors, it is strongly recommended you change the locks immediately. It is impossible to know who may have access to those lost keys and whether they could use them maliciously in order to gain access into your home. Don’t take chances with something as important as your family’s safety—get new locks installed right away!

MOVING HOME OR NEW TENANTS

When moving into a new home or renting out one you already own, it's wise to get new door locks installed for added security. You never know who has had access before you moved in and having fresh door locks will ensure only those with permission have access from now on. Similarly, if tenants move out of a rental property, you should also change the door locks—just in case they gave copies of their key away during their stay.

INCREASED THEFT & BURGLARY RATES

Finally, if theft and burglary rates in your area have gone up significantly over the past few years, then it may be wise to invest in upgraded door locks. Newer models come with advanced locking mechanisms that make them harder to pick or force open than older models, thus providing an extra layer of security in areas with higher crime rates.

Door locks play an integral role in securing our homes and protecting our families from potential intruders—so it's important that we keep them up-to-date and functioning correctly at all times. If any of the above scenarios sound familiar, then it might be time for some fresh door locks!
